Linda Barker reveals what the hottest interior design trends are for 2011. At the top of the list is Eco chic, sleek black units, knitting and bronze.

Linda is the force behind the “Ideal Interior of the Year” award at this years Ideal Home Show, and will be offering her design expertise in person at the event, with a series of demonstrations and seminars giving practical advice on home interior products, styling, design, tips and more to keep you on track with the latest looks. Eco Chic using warm woods and recycled timber

  • Borrows looks from the ski alpine chalet style
  • Smoke paint colours
  • Warm lighting
  • Textured accessories – faux fur, blanket & throws, sheepskin
  • Driftwood or natural horn timber to brighten a dark room

Arts and craft – re-learning traditional skills

  • Knitting, embroidery and crochet are bang on trend this year
  • Think subversive knitting rather than a knitted tea cosey
  • Enrol in a local workshop or course for beginners


Individual look – renovating vintage and second-hand furniture

  • Renovate cheap furniture with paint, fabric, wallpaper
  • Wrap floor lamps with old silk
  • Festoon the edge of a shade with bobbled trim
  • Visit your local charity shop and see what you can find
  • Create your own bespoke look


Metallics – gold and bronze

  • Best seen on the new breed of wallpapers
  • Give a shimmering, seductive look
  • Forget silver and chrome bronze and gold are Linda’s hot favourites
  • For a dark room choose warmer nickel shades

Back to black – kitchens and walls

  • Go for a glossy black kitchen – all out black is a wonderful diversion from ubiquitous white
  • Or you can opt to add a darker tones and highlights to keep the look on trend
  • Slate work tops
  • Black or dark grey sink
  • Black wallpaper


Grey is the new neutral

  • Grey is a great alternative to shades of cappuccino
  • Increase depth – use a variety of shades, get darker as you move up upstairs towards the bathroom and bedroom spaces
  • Layers of texture – velvets, linen wood and earthy tweeds
  • Pinstripe armchairs and plaid wood throws are Linda’s must accessories
