Design of the Day – Exposed industrial coat rack

A website called Brighton POD was brought to my attention by a colleague today and what a whimsical site it is! Full of eclectic and individually handmade pieces from up and coming designers. What I like about this site is how it acts as a propeller for new designers to showcase their work and also how buyers can contact the seller direct through the website which saves you trawling the internet for their email. To top that, buyers get a 14 day money back guarantee if they’re not happy with a purchase!

Inspired by the exposed piping in industrial buildings, Nick Fraser has created a coat rack which is made from copper pipes and brass fittings that are powder coated in bright colours. This design looks striking on the white wall and almost appears to be  part of a whole system hidden behind the wall. I love the impact this coat rack creates, it’s an instant eye-catcher.

You can buy this or any other of Nick Fraser’s coat racks from Brighton POD, this one will cost you £78 which I think is a bargain for such an origional piece.

Design of the Day – Bahia Chair

Today’s Design of the Day is a show stopper! I’m just head over heals with the Bahia Chair designed by London based design studio, 20age. This beautiful and vibrant chair has been re-upholstered in yellow velvet cord and green checked cotton by British and Brazilian duo Emma Phelps and Mauricio Varlotta.

Not only do the yellow and green fabrics sit perfectly together, they’re surrounded by a sea of 5000 coloured ribbons stitched on the back and sides.

The ribbons are seen as a lucky charm in Brazil and are tied around the wrist with three knots, each representing a wish and when the band falls off the wishes come true . What an uplifting concept and harmonious combination of English and Brazilian heritage.

How to make your own vintage cake stand

I’ve recently jumped on the crafting band wagon since Linda Barker demonstrated how to make a vintage cake stand at last months Ideal Home Show. I did a little research online and to my surprise found sites charging for instructions on how to make one.

There are two ways you can go about making a vintage stand, one is to drill holes in the plates and connect them with metal rods, the other is (in my opinion more eclectic) to use glasses as the support stands in between the plates.

So I’d like to give you a short and free guide to making your own bespoke vintage cake stand. Continue reading

Design of the Day – The world’s first designer energy saving light bulb

I first came across this design at this years Birmingham Interiors Show, in the Designers Block section and since then it’s popularity has rocketed. It was displayed in George Clarke’s revamped eco-friendly house at last months Ideal Home Show event at London’s Earl Court.

Designed by Sam Wilkinson, this Plumen light bulb is the worlds first designer energy-saving bulb which takes on a snake-like shape and looks amazing set in the dark glass shade. (Above) It lasts 8x longer and uses 80% les energy than incandescent bulbs, saving you on your electric bill as well as looking hot!

The name Plumen came from “plume” which is a birds decorative feather, used to attract attention and this certainly does that! The great news is that the bulb doesn’t cost a fortune and a nightmare to get hold of, in fact you can lay your hand on one of these delights for only £19.95 from B&Q! Hurry before they’re sold out!

The Design Hub bring you the lowdown on the Ideal Home Show 2011

I was lucky enough to grab a place at the press preview slot before the doors opened to the public which was fantastic as it allowed me to gather an abundance of features, news and interviews to give you all.

This years Ideal Home show certainly showed consumers that it’s 103rd event was perfectly up to date with the most current trends and topics within interior design and architecture. Eco-friendly and sustainable interiors were a huge focus this year, with Linda Barker demonstrating how-to seminars about up-cycling and architect George Clarke, refurbishing Ken and Deirdre Barlow‘s Coronation Street house into a sustainable retreat.

There’s no doubt this green theme has grown from the current economic state of the country, as people start to tighten their belts any means of saving the pennies will be popular.
